Advertising and Marketing Assessment

One similarity between the Lucozade and Capri- sun advertisements are they both have a copy. In the Lucozade advertisement the copy states "in a different league" this suggest to the audience that Lucozade sport is the best drink in the world and it can beat any other drinks in the drinks market. In the Capri sun advert the copy states "so healthy it's approved by schools" this suggests that the drink is going to be good for the person drinking it. Both of these copies are being used to try and persuade the audience to buy the product. Another similarity between both advertisements are the colour schemes used. Although the colour for each advertisement is different, the reason they have used certain colours is the same. This is because they are trying to get the target audience to remember the product. Lucozade have done this by using blue and orange as the colour scheme for their advertisement because the product colours used were blue and orange. Similarly Capri- sun have primarily used blue and orange as well for their colour scheme because the packaging they have used for the product was also blue and orange. This is to help the audience remember what the product looks like if they went to buy it. One more similarity between both advertisements are neither of them appear to have a slogan in them, this may be because the advertisers didn't want to make the advertisements look messy by trying to put things on it that wouldn't fit.

One difference between the Lucozade and Capri- sun adverts are that they have different primary target audiences. Lucozade's primary target audience is men that are interested in sports. This can be shown through the image of Gareth Bale, he shows the audience that this drink is primarily for sporty men because they most sporty people wish to be like Gareth Bale. Whereas Capri-sun's primary target audience is young children, both male and female. This can be shown through the two children in the advertisement. This can show that kids would enjoy the drinks if the parents brought them for the kids. Another difference between the two advertisements are they both have used the rule of thirds in different ways. In the Lucozade advert the copy is in the left three boxes and the image of Gareth Bale is in the three boxes on the right, having nothing in the middle box as that is the last place an audience would look. Whereas, the Capri- sun advertisement uses all the boxes. The product is in the half in the middle box an half out of it, with the copy in the bottom 3 boxes. This could have had a negative effect on what the target audience thinks as it would be the last thing they saw. One more difference between the two advertisements is they have different visual narratives. The visual narrative for the Lucozade advert is if the consumer has the drink it would make them look as good as when they started the activity. The visual narrative for the Capri- sun advertisement is the secondary primary audience, which is parents of the kids, would be wondering what benefits the product would have on their children.

Analysing Case Study 1: Lucozade

Who do you think are the target audience for this product?

I think the target audience for this product would be people that are interested in sports, specifically, people that are footballers. This is because the target audience would be able to relate with Bale as they would believe that they could be as good as him if they drink Lucozade sport.

Who is the person in the advertisement and what connotations would the target audience take from him being associated with the product?

The person in the advertisement is Gareth Bale. The connotations that the target audience would take from this advertisement is that the product is a drink that is really beneficial to people that play sports as it instantly replenishes your energy and causes you to look as good as you did before you started playing football.

How are other elements of media language being used? (colour, slogan, image, copy, shot type, mise- en- scene, etc)

In this advertisement there appears to be no slogan. The copy for this advertisement states 'In a different league', this could suggests to the target audience that the drink out of all of it's competitors. This could also suggest that the Bale is also out of the league in the sense of he is the best player of all time. The shot type is a medium close up, this is effective because emphasises that he still looks good after playing football, we imply this because he looks sweaty. We also think this because he is wearing a sports top. The colour scheme for this advertisement is blue and yellow, these are used because it will increase the chance of the audience to remember the product.

What different 'things' are being represented in the advertisement?

The things being represented in this advertisement are Gareth Bale, as being the best footballer in the world and the actual drink is also being represented.

Beats Advertisment

Visual Narrative:

The visual narrative for this advertisement is it makes the audience subconsciously ask "Why is the Z missing from the copy in the advertisement?" The name Jay- anchors what the copy is saying, in the copy it states "cheap earbuds don't deliver. Hear what you've been missing" this is anchors the copy because some of the name is missing from the red which suggests that the earbuds you are using at the minute are rubbish and if you buy and use beats your songs will be heard a lot clearer.

Copy:

This advertisement does contain some textual information about the products and everything they are doing with the product. The main part of the copy for this advertisement is the text "cheap earbuds don't deliver. Hear what you've been missing" This suggests that the standard earphones that people use, are not good enough as they miss certain sounds in the song.

Slogan:

This advertisement does not appear to have a slogan on it, which is unusal as most well known branded products will have their slogan on the advertisement.

Rule of Thirds:

This is when the photo is for the advertisementire is split into 9 grids, the photo is never in the centre of the grid and the photo would be rubbish. The writing for this advertisement is in certain place so no space is wasted on the advertisement. The brand logo is in the bottom right corner which shows what product is being sold and the copy is in various parts of the grid.

Colour:

The colour scheme for this advertisement is red, white and black. The reason Beats would have chosen this colour scheme, would have been because all the colours contrast with each other making them all stand out. The main colour for this advertisement is red, the reason this has been used is because it would excite the audience and it makes sure that the advertisement stands out to the audience. The use of the colour red also utilizes the space so none is wasted.

Association:

For this advertisement, there is reference to Jay-Z, he is an American rapper that is known world wide. This can be associated with beats because beats is a headphone company which can be used to listen to music to. This could be used to appeal to people who like listening to Jay-Z's music as they could think that they are missing out on some of his words in the song.

Music Video Assessment Task: Katy Perry Firework

In the Katy Perry song firework, the representation of Katy Perry are that she is a very glamorous person, this is because in the music video she has her hair and make up done. This is a representation of Katy because she is becoming across as a 'pop queen' and this means she will make appeal to her target audience (predominantly teenagers), she would appeal to teenage girls is because every girl would want to be like her and teenage boys would like to date somebody like her. Throughout the video Katy Perry is shown as becoming more confident as the song goes on. This is because at the start of the video she is shown to be unconfident with her appearance, this is shown by her face being completely covered in make up meaning she might not be entirely confident with her look, but as the song becomes more upbeat Katy becomes more confident with herself, this is shown by how her make up is presented. Although she is still wearing make up, it is a lot more subtle showing that she is becoming more confident.

In the video, there are little narrative stories shown, for example a teenage boy struggling with parents because they keep on fighting, a teenaged girl struggling with her body confidence. These are representations of what Katy Perry is trying to get across in her song. These narratives are shown to have teenagers in it, this could have been used because that is who her target audience is. At the very start of the music video, it shows a series of establishing shots, this is filmed in Budapest but it doesn't state this in the video showing that it could be based anywhere in the world. This could suggest to the person watching the music video that it is not only people in the specific place it was filmed that have these problems but everyone will have these problems. This relates to the song because in the song it states 'cause there's a spark in you, you just gotta ignite the light and let it shine' this suggests that even though you do have a problem, you have it inside you to find the confidence within yourself to overcome this. This is what the fireworks and spark from most characters in the video represent.

Throughout the entire video Katy is seemed to have dominance over the camera, meaning she is in the shot a lot, at the start she is seen walking out onto a balcony from a high angle, this could show that she is vulnerable as it looks like she could fall. As the tilt shot of her comes up we can see that she is wearing a white gown that seems expensive with jewelled earrings and because she is wearing these, Katy is shown to be high on a balcony looking down on the rest of the city. This could suggest to the person watching the video that she privileged enough to look down on the rest of society and sing.

Overall, I believe Katy Perry successfully constructed her music video to promote her video to her target audience. This is predominantly teenage girls.

60 second short film: Making a cup of tea

This is my 60 second short film, making a cup of tea, for my A level media work. As this was my first ever attempt at filming and editing my own video, I chose to keep what my film was about very simple, which is why I made a video about making a cup of tea. In my video I felt like there was no need for diegetic sound as I was only making a cup of tea, however I did use non- diegetic sound that was very upbeat, this was 'Good Sunny day' by Serj Anto.

For this video I was told it must have a least 5 basic camera shots, at least 2 basic camera angles and at least 2 camera movements. I feel like I did not complete this task as I only included a couple of camera shots, however I believe I managed to include more than 2 camera angles such as a high angle shots and establishing shots. Another part that my video must be included was a title, I exceeded this by adding 2 title one at the end explaining what the video was about 'Making a cup of tea' and one at the end stating that the video had finished 'The end'.

I didn't show any awareness of Mise en scene as I didn't think about where the video was filmed, what I was wearing in the video and who was acting in the video I created.
Obviously my filming wasn't the best as  I have only just started the course but I hope to improve this as the course goes on, one obvious thing I need to improve is which way I hold the camera whilst filming as the video was being edited the footage was showed in a square which is not how I wanted the video to be showed.

If I was asked to do this again, I would possibly look to do more of a story based film, such as people were in the video and talking to either the camera or to each other. I would also consider syncing the music to the footage itself to make it look a lot more professional.

Media Langauge: Stereotypical Representations

The reason I have chosen to put this as a movie poster that shows the stereotypical representations of how men and women feel about love. This is because in the poster the women is holding the heart close to her head, showing that she is thinking about what she truly wants and is she does really like him. Whereas the man is holding it over his trousers, this could show that the man is only thinking about what he can get out of the relationship not about his future plans. This shows the representations of how people perceive men and women to think about love and relationship.

The reason I have also chosen this film poster is because it shows the representations of how people would have felt back around the 1920's towards the segregation between white and black people. This is because people thought that the white people were the more superior race compared to the black. This shows how black people would have typically had jobs such as servants and the white wouldn't have had a job as they would have stayed home while the men worked.

The reason I have chosen this film poster is because it shows the representations of how men are more violent then women. This is because the man is holding the gun like he is ready to shoot someone, whereas the woman is holding the gun like she doesn't know how to use it. This is a representation on some peoples thoughts on women are more fragile compared to men therefore they cannot use a gun.

Assessment work: Bond Poster Analysis

This poster was designed to promote a film in the film industry. In the James Bond 2010 movie 'spectre' poster, you can see the movie was created by Columbia pictures, the advertisement would have been done by a advertisement agency which would have been briefed by Eon productions. Eon productions are an English based company founded in 1961 by Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman. Eon productions are responsible for the making of 24 James Bond movies. However, Columbia pictures is partly owned by Sony, as is Eon productions.

The denotations for this movie poster would be a man in a black suit holding a gun.  The reason they have a man in black is so he contrasts with the white background to make him stand out, this is known as anchorage. The colour black suit could be associated with power, elegance, formality, death, evil and being mysterious. There is also a woman in a blue/ silver tight dress. when making thoughts like that, these are known as connotationsThe dress is in a silvery blue colour because it is associated as being sleek, glamourous, graceful, sophisticated, elegant, trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith and truth. This could be significant to the movie as the women  may not be that type of person in the film. The two people are standing in front of the writings of 007. This could be to represent the significance of in the 7 of the 007, due to the 7 being put in to the gun end. This could represent how the gun is significant to the film being about a spy. this is because spy's are associated with being violent and carry weapons around with them.

In the poster inside the gun there is person wearing a top hat and a skull mask. This could be to signify that the people he is fighting are dangerous and clever, the reason these could be shown are because top hats are usually worn by important/ wealthy people which some people think those people are more important. The reason the skull could be white is because the colour white is associated with light, goodnessinnocencepurity. It is considered to be the colour of perfectionHowever this could means that the spy could be doing his job for the safety and protection of other people that are innocent. Underneath this is the name of which Bond movie it is. The sign 'spectre' is written slightly spaced out and all in caps. this could be to stand out and causes the audience to look at that specific thing first. However, this could be to make sure that people remember what the film is so they can tell their friends and family about it.

The product has been designed to look appealing and interesting to the audience. The target audience would be people that were interested in spy films and people that are interested in action movies. You can tell that this film involves action and spy's, is by the gun in the 007 and the 007 itself as this is a famous number that is associated with a certain spy. The film industry could have made this look interesting by making the layout of the poster different compared to any other poster, this is because they have faded the background to make it look like the numbers are at the back of the background and they have put the people just in front of the numbers. They could have also done this through having a white background, the reason having a white background can improve the way people look at it is because it makes the everything stand out and contrasts with all the colours used.

The representations of this poster would be the man and woman in this poster. This would be because they are shown as a stereotype of a spy. These people are serious looking and smart. These qualities are shown by how they are looking and dressed. They both look smart because they are dressed formally, like they are going to a occasion that requires them to get all dressed up.

This is the James Bond poster I was referring to

The History of Newspapers

The Oxford Gazette was the first true newspaper to be printed in London on 7th November 1665. The Oxford Gazette was first published because Charles 2nd ordered it when him and the royal family escaped to oxford when the great plague broke out, where is ordered it to be printed at the University press. In the 17th century nobody would be able to read as the poor would't be able to afford to read as they would not have the money to send their children to school. With the plague disappearing from the capital, and Charles II and his court back in London, The London Gazette is born, as 'issue 24'. The London Gazette was first published on 16 November 1665. It became the only published newspaper in London during the late 17th century, as all others were being suppressed. However, in the UK the right to print was strictly controlled, publication was controlled under the Licensing Act of 1662.

The London Gazette was set like this

In the 18th century the first English Journalist to achieve national importance was Daniel Defoe. This is because in 1704 he released his weekly newspaper, the Review. This was printed at least 3 times a week which was a forerunner of the Tatler, Daniel's newspaper came to an end in 1710. To learn more about Daniel Defoe click here.

In the early 19th century there were 52 different newspapers being published in London, this caused development for the public's need for information. It also had a massive growth in circulation for major events, and it also improved communication overall between people. The Daily Universal Register began life in 1785. This was later to become known as The Times from 1788. This was the most significant newspaper of the first half of the 19th century, but from around 1860 there were a number of more strongly competitive titles, each differentiated by its political biases and interests. In 1802 and 1815 the tax on newspapers was increased to three pence and then four pence. Unable or unwilling to pay this fee, between 1831 and 1835 hundreds of untaxed newspapers made their appearance.

Some of the major newspapers in the past still remain a major newspaper for modern day, such as the Daily Telegraph. The Daily Telegraph was first published on 29 June 1855 and was owned by Arthur Sleigh, who transferred it to Joseph Levy the following year. Levy produced it as the first penny newspaper in London. His son, Edward Lawson soon became editor, a post he held until 1885. The Daily Telegraph became the organ of the middle class and could claim the largest circulation in the world in 1890. It held a consistent Liberal Party allegiance until opposing Gladstone's foreign policy in 1878 when it turned Unionist.

Another newspaper that is major within the modern world is The Daily Mail. The Daily Mail was first published in 1896 by Lord Northcliffe, it became Britain's second biggest-selling daily newspaper after The Sun. The Daily Mail was Britain's first daily newspaper aimed at the newly literate "lower-middle class market resulting from mass education, combining a low retail price with plenty of competitions, prizes and promotional gimmicks", and the first British paper to sell a million copies a day. It was, from the outset, a newspaper for women, being the first to provide features especially for them and is the only British newspaper whose readership is more than 50 % female, at 53 %

William Caxton was an English merchant, writer and printer. He is thought to be the first Englishman to introduce a printing press into England, in 1476, and was the first English retailer of printed books. For more information about the printing press in general, watch the clip below.

Me and the Media

My relationship with the different types of media range from never using it to always using it. The media has a wide range of types, for example Film, the Music industry, newspapers and the internet (social media). my relationship with Film is not the best as I rarely ever watch films. However, if I do watch a film I would watch a film in the genre of horror and thriller. My most recent favourite horror movie to watch is the Death Note, this is because it is about somebody that thinks they are helping people but then he realises what he has done. This film was exclusive to Netflix, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The main trailer photograph is shown below.

However in some parts of the media I do not have a very good relationship with it. An example I do not have a good relationship with newspaper. This is because if I ever need to read the news I will go online to do it. This is because what ever is in a physical newspaper such as a tabloid and broadsheets. I would go onto an online newspaper site such as The Sun to read catch up on the news. However, this would be on a rare occasion if I was told to do so by either my parents or a teacher. The only time I would read the news is if a tragedy had happened and I wanted to read up on it so I can sympathise with the people that were involved in it and if they had lost anyone I could send them my condolences. Click here to visit The Sun online and catch up on the most recent news.

I do watch Television but however it isn't that frequent. I used to watch the casual soaps such as EastEnders, Casualty and Holby City. This is because I used to like how the whole thing was set up. Such as the characters/ actors in it and how it was filmed, this is because I am one of those people that like watching multiple different family dramas. My favourite line from EastEnders would be "Get out of my pub" said by the character Peggy Mitchell.

Online Newspaper vs Print Newspaper Essay

One advantage of the Online media is it allows you to have unlimited access. This is an advantage compared to print newspapers because...
