Music Video Assessment Task: Katy Perry Firework
In the Katy Perry song firework, the representation of Katy Perry are that she is a very glamorous person, this is because in the music video she has her hair and make up done. This is a representation of Katy because she is becoming across as a 'pop queen' and this means she will make appeal to her target audience (predominantly teenagers), she would appeal to teenage girls is because every girl would want to be like her and teenage boys would like to date somebody like her. Throughout the video Katy Perry is shown as becoming more confident as the song goes on. This is because at the start of the video she is shown to be unconfident with her appearance, this is shown by her face being completely covered in make up meaning she might not be entirely confident with her look, but as the song becomes more upbeat Katy becomes more confident with herself, this is shown by how her make up is presented. Although she is still wearing make up, it is a lot more subtle showing that she is becoming more confident.
In the video, there are little narrative stories shown, for example a teenage boy struggling with parents because they keep on fighting, a teenaged girl struggling with her body confidence. These are representations of what Katy Perry is trying to get across in her song. These narratives are shown to have teenagers in it, this could have been used because that is who her target audience is. At the very start of the music video, it shows a series of establishing shots, this is filmed in Budapest but it doesn't state this in the video showing that it could be based anywhere in the world. This could suggest to the person watching the music video that it is not only people in the specific place it was filmed that have these problems but everyone will have these problems. This relates to the song because in the song it states 'cause there's a spark in you, you just gotta ignite the light and let it shine' this suggests that even though you do have a problem, you have it inside you to find the confidence within yourself to overcome this. This is what the fireworks and spark from most characters in the video represent.
Throughout the entire video Katy is seemed to have dominance over the camera, meaning she is in the shot a lot, at the start she is seen walking out onto a balcony from a high angle, this could show that she is vulnerable as it looks like she could fall. As the tilt shot of her comes up we can see that she is wearing a white gown that seems expensive with jewelled earrings and because she is wearing these, Katy is shown to be high on a balcony looking down on the rest of the city. This could suggest to the person watching the video that she privileged enough to look down on the rest of society and sing.
Overall, I believe Katy Perry successfully constructed her music video to promote her video to her target audience. This is predominantly teenage girls.

Katy Perry- Firework response 2
ReplyDeleteIn the Katy Perry ‘Firework’, she is represented as a very glamourous person, this is because in the music video she has her hair and make-up done up. This is a representation of Perry because it is showing her as a ‘pop queen’ meaning she will appeal to her target audience, her target audience is mainly teenagers. This is because teenage girls will think that she really pretty and therefore would aspire to look like her. Throughout the music video, it looks like Perry becomes more confident. This is by how the producers have constructed the video, at the start of the video Perry is shown as a delicate by the way she is dressed and how she is walking and acting. The reason for this is because she does every action delicately. Whereas as the music video becomes further in she is shown jumping around and running down streets showing she is more confident.
In Perry’s 2010 song ‘Firework’, producers have constructed the music video to show multiple narrative stories which show the representation of the target audience, this is predominantly teenagers. An example of this would be the teenage boy, this boy is dealing with his parents fighting in front of him and his younger sister. When we first see the young boy’s parents arguing, a focus pull is used to adjust the focus in the shot of his face, he then continues to intervene with the parent’s argument by pushing his parents away. This shows the idealised representations for the fans in what the song ‘firework’ is trying to get across. This is that everybody has the confidence in them to do what they want and overcome any fears they may have. The idea of confidence is shown in the use of CGI, when fireworks start to come out of Perry’s and other people in the narrative’s chests. The connotations of the fireworks would be that the confidence that people would like to require has always been there, they just have to find it. This is also shown in the lyrics ‘cause there’s a spark in you, you just gotta ignite the light and let it shine’, because of this, the fan base of Perry can feel a sense of loyalty from Katy Perry herself and it can make them feel like a part of a larger movement. This would have been made through the narrative representations that have been constructed.
Throughout the entire music video, Perry is shown to have dominance over the camera, meaning she is in shot a lot. At the start of the music video she is seen walking out onto a balcony in the middle of the night from a high angle in a white gown, however the gown looks slightly grey. This could represent the feeling of vulnerability to the target audience as it looks like she is going to fall, because of the white/grey gown it shows the directors have thought about mis en scene and how this can be used to show lots of different points of views and ideas. For example, after the tilt shot of Perry, which shows that she is wearing expensive jewelled earrings. Katy Perry is filmed from a high angle on a balcony looking down at the city below. This could represent that she is more privileged enough to look down on the rest of society and sing. Another example that shows the producers are thinking about mis en scene, is when the establishing shot above the city is first shown. This is because the video was filmed in Budapest, but the way Budapest looks it could be anywhere. Therefore, suggesting that everybody in the world has this problem and not only certain people in the world.
