Advertising and Marketing Assessment

One similarity between the Lucozade and Capri- sun advertisements are they both have a copy. In the Lucozade advertisement the copy states "in a different league" this suggest to the audience that Lucozade sport is the best drink in the world and it can beat any other drinks in the drinks market. In the Capri sun advert the copy states "so healthy it's approved by schools" this suggests that the drink is going to be good for the person drinking it. Both of these copies are being used to try and persuade the audience to buy the product. Another similarity between both advertisements are the colour schemes used. Although the colour for each advertisement is different, the reason they have used certain colours is the same. This is because they are trying to get the target audience to remember the product. Lucozade have done this by using blue and orange as the colour scheme for their advertisement because the product colours used were blue and orange. Similarly Capri- sun have primarily used blue and orange as well for their colour scheme because the packaging they have used for the product was also blue and orange. This is to help the audience remember what the product looks like if they went to buy it. One more similarity between both advertisements are neither of them appear to have a slogan in them, this may be because the advertisers didn't want to make the advertisements look messy by trying to put things on it that wouldn't fit.

One difference between the Lucozade and Capri- sun adverts are that they have different primary target audiences. Lucozade's primary target audience is men that are interested in sports. This can be shown through the image of Gareth Bale, he shows the audience that this drink is primarily for sporty men because they most sporty people wish to be like Gareth Bale. Whereas Capri-sun's primary target audience is young children, both male and female. This can be shown through the two children in the advertisement. This can show that kids would enjoy the drinks if the parents brought them for the kids. Another difference between the two advertisements are they both have used the rule of thirds in different ways. In the Lucozade advert the copy is in the left three boxes and the image of Gareth Bale is in the three boxes on the right, having nothing in the middle box as that is the last place an audience would look. Whereas, the Capri- sun advertisement uses all the boxes. The product is in the half in the middle box an half out of it, with the copy in the bottom 3 boxes. This could have had a negative effect on what the target audience thinks as it would be the last thing they saw. One more difference between the two advertisements is they have different visual narratives. The visual narrative for the Lucozade advert is if the consumer has the drink it would make them look as good as when they started the activity. The visual narrative for the Capri- sun advertisement is the secondary primary audience, which is parents of the kids, would be wondering what benefits the product would have on their children.

Analysing Case Study 1: Lucozade

Who do you think are the target audience for this product?

I think the target audience for this product would be people that are interested in sports, specifically, people that are footballers. This is because the target audience would be able to relate with Bale as they would believe that they could be as good as him if they drink Lucozade sport.

Who is the person in the advertisement and what connotations would the target audience take from him being associated with the product?

The person in the advertisement is Gareth Bale. The connotations that the target audience would take from this advertisement is that the product is a drink that is really beneficial to people that play sports as it instantly replenishes your energy and causes you to look as good as you did before you started playing football.

How are other elements of media language being used? (colour, slogan, image, copy, shot type, mise- en- scene, etc)

In this advertisement there appears to be no slogan. The copy for this advertisement states 'In a different league', this could suggests to the target audience that the drink out of all of it's competitors. This could also suggest that the Bale is also out of the league in the sense of he is the best player of all time. The shot type is a medium close up, this is effective because emphasises that he still looks good after playing football, we imply this because he looks sweaty. We also think this because he is wearing a sports top. The colour scheme for this advertisement is blue and yellow, these are used because it will increase the chance of the audience to remember the product.

What different 'things' are being represented in the advertisement?

The things being represented in this advertisement are Gareth Bale, as being the best footballer in the world and the actual drink is also being represented.
